About Us
The History
Saldenah was founded in 1952 by the late great Harold Saldenah whose work and reputation transcend into time. Hailed by many also known as (Sally) the “Father of modern Carnival”, he introduced many concepts such as metal head pieces, standards and most importantly was the first to recognise that for competition purposes it was more efficient to present the band in sections which every carnival around the world now follows this tradition. He brought out bands that graced Trinidads stage for 25 years.
In 1977, Sally moved to Canada, where he brought his expertise of Trinidad-style carnival to Toronto Caribana which he then encouraged his son, Louis Saldenah to bring a band. Louis was the second generation to lead Saldenah’s journey into mas’ leadership with high ambition, legacy, resilience, and a promise to his father. He accomplished 48 years of service leading Saldenah in Toronto, mentoring many existing Toronto MAS band leaders, generating hundreds of millions in revenue to the city of Toronto, the first band leader to be requested a meeting with Canada’s PM Justin Trudeau in 2024 to discuss Louis’s expertise to help all MAS band members to seek appropriate funding to continue their contributions in Toronto, the only MAS band leader to have successfully won 21 titles to date.
A Legacy
Revitalized
The Future
Saldenah’s legacy is now being revitalized by Louis four children the third generation who have spent their lives engaged in the world of Carnival. From designing big MAS (King/Queen) with unique blends of talent and creativity, to each of them successfully working as section leaders gaining MAS experience, designing their costumes year after year, they individually have combined a unique force of talent. With their father’s retirement in September 2025, they’re now stepping in to lead Saldenah into its next chapter.
Today, Saldenah is proud to serve Toronto Carnival with the same care, expertise, innovative ideas that has defined us for five decades but more importantly the evolution of Toronto Carnival experience.
